The history of PRX

The 1970s were a golden era for several things: disco, Star Wars, and the rise of sports-luxe timepieces. While John Travolta was capturing the world’s attention with his slick hair and dance moves, the fashion for slimline watches with integrated bracelets also soared. It was during this period, in 1978, that Tissot introduced the original PRX. Characterised by its flat, barrel-shaped case, sharply defined edges, and iconic bracelet with large flexible links integrated into the case, the PRX was an instant hit. Powered by a cutting-edge quartz movement, it was not only stylish but also affordable. Initially launched under the Seastar range, the PRX quickly carved out its own identity, with the name symbolising ‘Precise’ and ‘Robust,’ and the Roman numeral X representing its 10 atmospheres of water resistance (100 metres).

The PRX collection has become a key part of Tissot’s heritage, defined by its 1970s-inspired design and sports-luxe appeal. The collection was revitalised in 2020 with a modern twist, beginning with quartz models before progressing to automatic versions equipped with the state-of-the-art Powermatic 80 movement.

As Tissot’s CEO Sylvain Dolla recounted, “I was in our archives, which house 7,000 restored historical timepieces. When I stumbled upon the original 1970s 35mm PRX, I was captivated. It was then that I realised we had to bring this icon back to life.” By 2020, the PRX was reborn, with the automatic Powermatic 80 models quickly gaining worldwide popularity. With their retro aesthetic combined with modern features, such as the 80-hour power reserve and the Nivachron balance spring for shock and magnetic resistance, these watches became highly sought after (Oracle of Time).

Introducing the new PRX Gradient

We are excited to introduce two stunning models from the new PRX Powermatic 80 collection, which will soon be available in our stock:

Both timepieces feature striking gradient dials that beautifully play with light, transitioning from darker to lighter shades reminiscent of dusk and dawn. Their 40mm stainless steel cases, along with integrated bracelets, offer a perfect blend of Tissot’s rich heritage and contemporary craftsmanship, ideal for today’s urban professional who seeks both style and functionality. The waffle-patterned dial adds a distinctive flair, while the colour gradients make a bold statement.

With scratch-resistant sapphire crystals and a robust automatic movement that delivers up to 80 hours of power reserve, these watches are engineered to be both beautiful and reliable. The Nivachron balance spring ensures resistance against the effects of daily wear, including shocks and magnetic fields. These PRX models are designed to stand out, whether you’re in a professional environment or enjoying the city’s vibrant lifestyle.
